What if ‘the news’ instead of focusing on acts of violence, delivered us stories of people acting in humane ways…? What if primary and secondary education included critical thinking, money management and emotional intelligence? What if instead of relying on news channels and schools, we take the work in-house, clean our side of the street and lead an emotionally rich and secure life with our families so the people closest to them set a healthy example?

Thank you, Tom. I love this story. I've had this tab open to read this for so long that I don't remember how I got here. Maybe you recommended it. It doesn't matter. As someone with eleven years in the bag, I was right there with you.

Men are fully happy to engage in emotions, provided they're the safe ones: anger, rage, disgust, even happiness. It's the dangerous [read: vulnerable] ones that scare us. We're so sceer'd of vulnerable emotions, we're withdrawn from every physical connection too, like hugging.

Guilty as charged. As a kid into young adulthood, I was the "I don't shake hands, I give hugs" kinda guy. After a decade in leadership roles and a tiny pandemic, it's like I've forgotten how to connect with other men. It's taken a conscious override of this subroutine to reach out physically and emotionally.

But this is where we are.
