The people around us don’t appreciate it when we make excuses. When we are aware we are doing so, we feel weak. We are disappointing ourselves.
Even those of us who search within for deeper understanding can fall into the trap of using the insights we gain as excuses for our wrongs. But, the purpose of insight is to inform us as to what we need to change, not to justify our impropriety.
We all make mistakes. This is not a cop out. It only means we are human. Healthy people understand this and can accept responsibility when they fall short. They can do so without descending into shame or self-pity.
Good, humble human beings see themselves accurately in relation to the Universe. This enables them to be accountable for their behavior, yet to forgive themselves for it. They know they will be loved no matter what.
We often presume they will do the opposite, but people tend to see us as more trustworthy if we are honest and direct when we fall short.
May we accept responsibility for our actions today. Let us do so while maintaining my dignity.
