Hey folks,
Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time here on Substack and have seen a modest, yet significant, burst in subscriptions and follows. Â
First, let me say thank you, and welcome aboard. Allow me to take this opportunity to orient you to this little corner of the internet.
I found my way to Substack in 2022, when one of my favorite musicians launched a publication here. For some time, I’d been looking for someplace to share some of my work in progress. As I became familiar with this app, I realized it was right place. So, here we are.
Soon after lunching here, I imported a list of email addresses which included friends, colleagues, and listeners of my podcast, The Path to Authenticity.
My initial plan was to use Substack to build a larger audience by posting passages from the manuscript(s) I’ve been working on since around 2018.
I knew there were many portions of these larger compositions that I could publish as stand-alone pieces. These are the stories found under the umbrella of the eponymous newsletter, The Manifest. Here is one of my favorites.
Next, I created the section, or newsletter, I originally called The Monday Memo. In the interest of flexibility, I changed it to The Memo.
At the time, I was publishing podcast episodes each week, and hosting online spaces regularly on the Clubhouse app. I thought The Memo would be a good place to let readers know where they could find me, or my work, each week. But, as my life changed, so did the newsletter. I’ve toyed around with it quite a bit.
Going forward, my plan is to publish new editions of The Memo at least twice a month. Each time, I’ll share an interesting quote, some commentary that relates to the subject matter of that quote, and a journaling prompt that relates to one or both of those.
The Memo is available to anyone right now. Eventually, it will only be available to paid subscribers.
Here is the latest edition of The Memo.
I think a lot of the writing I’ve published here on The Manifest as recovery adjacent. But, I realized, over time, that in an effort to present this content in a way that might benefit any reader, I was failing to reach many readers who seemed hungry for this specific type of writing.
In September, I began publishing stories directly related to my experience with addiction and recovery in The Sober Path.
Hence, the uptick in subscribers.
Thank you for the warm response. I look to do a lot more with this, and to deepen the connection. Please keep an eye on the chat.
Speaking of the chat… If you are not aware, there is a chat feature on the Substack app. After wondering for some time why no one seemed to be responding to my posts in the chat, I realized yesterday that my chat posts were limited to paid subscribers. So, I changed that. I would love to hear from you. Please join the chat.
When I created The Podcast, it was the only way to post sound on this app. At that time, it was mostly readings of my posts for paid subscribers. I’ve not done much with this feature recently. For now, I’m working on some new ideas for it.
Last week, I moved one of my podcasts, Men Who Talk, here to Substack.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be consolidating, moving The Path to Authenticity and my other shows here, as well. For now, you can still find all my podcast on all the major podcast apps. If you haven’t checked any of them out, please do.
Lastly, if you want to keep up with the work I’m doing in the field of addiction treatment, you can subscribe to my professional newsletter.
Stick around if you want to know more. I’ll keep writing.
Thank you for reading.
